The Need for Community

On Monday morning, many people found out that there had been a mass shooting in Las Vegas. Stephen Paddock killed 58 people and injured nearly 500 others. As information emerges regarding Stephen Paddock and his life, one of the details that continues to surface is the fact that he was estranged from relationships, and community. He seems to have avoided social interaction as much as possible. How vital it is for us to be in community with people who care and love each other! How important it is for each individual to feel loved!. How crucial it is for us to love others! Dr. Leonard Sweet recently posted on Facebook, “A mature human is not self-reliant, but fully embedded in connections and relationships.” It takes maturity for us to recognize our need for each other. It takes maturity for us to actively seek and live in genuine relationships.

God created us for community. God exists in the Triune community. The heavenly hosts existed before Adam was created. God clearly recognizes that it is not good for Adam to be alone. Thus Eve is created, and the human race begins. This means that in order for us to be divinely human as possible, we need to be in a relationship with God and God’s people. In doing so, we are most alive and most strong.

Would we be a community that is full of God’s love and grace! I pray and hope that we are a faith community that continually grows in God’s love and that love keeps on growing outward to the world around us! Amen!
